Battening Down

Lake of Menteith

I came home earlier than planned from a few days away photographing on the other side of Scotland as the bad weather was closing in. The price paid for living in a beautiful, mountainous location on the shores of a sea loch is that nature occasionally wins. Tonight there’s a deepening storm on the way, with damaging winds predicted.

Having served as a volunteer firefighter for the best part of a decade and tried to assist with the impacts of extreme weather events and hill fires, I’m aware what can, and what can’t be ‘managed’. There’s a particular stoicism about those living in remote locations.

Be practical. Get the basics in place. Back up your options for light and cooking. Sleeping bags and snuggling down with a warm partner. Be something of a prepper. But nature will always win and some of us will sometimes lose. Just be there to help and don’t take unnecessary risks.
