Inspiration

This list could of course be endless, but I’ve added links, in no particular order to the YouTube channels of photographers and other people who have served as educators, entertainers, and sources of inspiration for those times when my skills or direction were found wanting.

Do please visit their channels and support these amazing creators with likes and subscribes and all the usual kindness we extend as a community.

Photography links

Thomas Heaton: A true outdoorsman whose landscape photography is simply breathtaking. I’ve followed his channel for years and my camper van obsession is all his fault. Introverted like me, but totally committed to his army of YouTube followers.

James Popsys: A naturally funny, warm communicator with an admirable, clearly-honed photographic style, capturing the relationship between humans and nature. I could, and often do, watch his videos for hours.

Gavin Hardcastle: His Fototripper channel is rightly, immensely popular. Gavin is a natural, hilarious, and completely committed communicator and photography educator. His enthusiasm and passion for the subject is infectious. On top of all that, he’s a brilliant photographer. Sickening really.

Simon D’Entremont: A wildlife photographer from Eastern Canada who delivers his meticulously structured educational videos in such an engaging manner that it’s impossible not to understand and learn. A fabulous wildlife photographer.

Mads Peter Iverson: One of the most skilled landscape photographers, producing stunning fine-art images worthy of any publication. His background in educational philosophy and his wonderful Danish lilt make for top quality educational content.

Nigel Danson: An incredibly enthusiastic, honest, and generous-of-spirit photographer and educator. His landscapes and woodland photographs are stunning. He also takes great drone shots and provides excellent coaching videos, covering all aspects of photography, including printing photos.

Alex Armitage: A thoughtful, erudite landscape photographer from Florida who documents his expeditions beautifully. He shares his personal development journey in honest and uplifting videos with a wisdom that only comes from having travelled extensively.

Ian Worth: Creates easy-to-watch journal-style landscape photography videos from his base in South Wales. Adept at coastal photography and passionate about sharing his love for nature. He bought a new van, which promptly broke, so we all chipped in to help him get it fixed - that’s how fond his fans are of him.

Sean Tucker: A professional, highly successful commercial portrait photographer and creative street photographer. A deep thinker and philosopher on human creativity. An outstanding photographer with an almost supernatural sense of light and shade.

Roman Fox: A totally down-to-earth London-based street photographer with a work ethic that puts many to shame. He produces clear, concise instructional videos and guides and takes some truly inspiring images.

Chris Lee (Pal2Tech): Anyone who owns a Fujifilm camera will have undoubtedly watched many Pal2Tech videos. Chris’s geeky, slightly chaotic and thoroughly entertaining tutorials delve deeply into all aspects of owning and getting the best out of our Fujifilm kit. The man deserves a medal.

Christopher Frost: If you’re ever thinking of buying a camera lens, don’t, until you’ve watched Christopher’s video review of it. It’s almost certain that in the hundreds of videos he’s made that he’ll have covered it, in the same structured, familiar, and objective manner. A trusted source of opinion.

Non photography links:

Murray Wilkie (Scotland’s Mountains): Knows pretty much everything there is to know about Scotland’s hills and mountains. Takes his YouTube viewers to the most amazing, breathtaking scenery, while regaling his gently delivered stories and tips. I’ll probably never make it up another Munro, but I’ll happily watch Murray climb several in a day.

Met Office UK: It’s Scotland. I’m a photographer. It helps to know what I’ll be facing on my next adventure. The channel is presented by expert meteorologists with deep dives into the more scientific aspects of our weather for the geeks among us.

Dave Borlace (Just Have A Think): A tenuous link to photography, but Dave, funded by his loyal cohort of Patreon supporters, delivers thoughtful, accessible commentary on a whole range of subjects affecting our climate and natural world.

Marques Brownlee (MKBHD): One of the world’s best independent reviewers of new technology, including phones and their cameras. Has a massive, global following of over 20 million subscribers (rightly deserved). A completely natural, erudite presenter, backed-up by a dedicated team of tech professionals. High quality content is a given.
