Inspiration
The ant and the oak leaf
The temptation to compare my work to that of other photographers is sometimes too great - a path that used only to lead to doubt and disheartenment. Unless you’re one of those for whom competition is a great motivator, steer clear of virtuoso’s. They’re just too damned good.
My guitar playing years were effectively over when, as a young, enthusiastic wannabe rockstar, my clumsy, limited repertoire was put firmly in its place by an even younger, talented kid who made making music seem so effortless. It wasn’t of course. He simply started younger, had an undoubted talent, and developed his mastery through practice and dedication. Like all the other Salieris, I have to put in the hours. The key with photography is that I enjoy it. Relieved of the pressure of having to make a primary living from it - to stand out sufficiently from the Mozarts, I can progress at a gentler pace and seek my inspiration when I need it. I know I’m improving as I’ve now begun to admire those masters. Not to compete, but to learn.
I’ve added a new page to my website - Links, where I’ll share some of my sources of photographic inspiration. They’re mostly the YouTube channels of current day landscape photographers (I’m not particularly well-read when it comes to past masters). I’d recommend also visiting their web sites, which always present a more considered, personal perspective. I hope you too find their work inspirational. Do let me know who rings your triangle.
The Links page also includes references to my kit. I’ve previously blogged about my penchant for shopping. Spending money that I haven’t got - now there’s a skill at which I do excel. I’ve recently added a new camera bag (v.good) and some better filters (jury’s out). A new tripod found its way though the post, and was promptly returned, as its lauded quick release system (Ulanzi F38), was unable to actually hold my camera at all without needing extra gubbins, let alone release it quickly. The quest continues. For now, I’ll stick to my trusty SmallRig stick.
I’m also a bit of a prepper and an EDC (Every Day Carry) freak, so I may even sneak in recommendations for a few of the perfect tools and gadgets that help me on my photography and camper van travels. They might save you some trial-and-error. There are the obligatory Amazon links to most of the gear, which if you do use to purchase something, generate a few pennies in commission for this old rock star.
